Fifths
v Port Sunlight Vets
Result
5 v 4
A
topsy-turvy game that started with
Port Sunlight Vets totally
dominating proceedings, knocking
the ball around well on a glue-pot
of a pitch. They took the lead
after some slack marking at the
back post. The fifths got back in
the game when a speculative shot
from Martin Moore slipped through
the keepers fingers to make it
1:1.
Port
Sunlight Vets continued to press
and Waitey returned the favour by
letting a shot squirm through his
hands making it 2:1 to Port
Sunlight Vets. Then came arguably
the turning point of the game, a
clumsy challenge from Barnesy
resulted in the award of a
penalty. Waitey made amends for
his earlier error with a smart
save down to his right hand side
making it 2:1 to Port Sunlight
Vets at the interval
At
half time, Clive and Wilbur
replaced Barnesy and Chris. A
greater sense of urgency and more
fluency pervaded the fifths play!
Dave Maynard wasted a glorious
chance when he should have rounded
the keeper when 1 on 1. Phil
Sturgess broke through on the left
and with the defenders backing off
and backing off he took it on and
rifled a shot into the top right
hand corner making it 2:2. Then
with in the space of 5 minutes,
the fifths went 4:2 up with 2
tap-ins from Martin Moore, the
first after good work from Dave
Maynard chasing down a weak back
pass.
This
seemed to shake Port Sunlight Vets
out of their lethargy and they
proceeded to take the game back to
the fifths. A clever chip played
into no-mans land allowed them to
make it 4:3 and then a huge goal
mouth scramble resulted in a
scrappy equaliser.
The
fifths galvanised themselves again
and after a long punt from Waitey,
good work from Dave Maynard who
put in a great cross to unmarked
Martin Moore to score his 4th, 5:4
to the fifths.
Port
Sunlight Vets made 1 final effort
and with the last kick of the
game, the shot was goalbound from
6 yards out, Waitey somehow stuck
out a hand and tipped it over the
bar. Vintage!!
MOM:
Difficult to choose but probably
Martin Moore (for his 4 goals) but
a good effort in midfield from
Alan and Lee.
