Competition: U10
Match Details: (A) Chester Nomads U10s v Hope Farm JFC
Result: 10- 1
Scorers: Walker (2), Baird (1), Pickering (3), Ap Gareth (3), Hassell (1)
MoM: Ap Gareth

Match Summary: `A star can win any game, a team can win every game`. Jack Ramsey, NBA

This maxim was never more amply demonstrated than today by the Under 10`s. It wasn`t the size of the victory that counted but the way it was achieved that was important. Half the people that started scored today and that said everything about the selfless way that the team went about their business.

The pitch was small, the weather cold and foggy and the opposition were determined to cause an upset using the slope to kick with in the first half. However from the first minute, when Walker scored the opening goal, to the last, when Pickering finished off the scoring, the lads were on top of their game.

Some of the approach play was extremely pleasing upon the eye. Carey was unfortunate to conceed a goal in the first half and made an excellent double save deep into the second half to avoid history repeating itself. In defence, Bilsland and Chadwick not only broke up attacks but their passing was of such quality that they became an integral part of the attack. Patterson improves with every game and now finds himself an integral part of the coaches plans. Captain Walker was exremely unlucky to not bag a hat trick that his work deserved. Boughton Heath must have an embarrassment of riches to leave such a talented lad out of their school team!! Rigg was calmness personified, taking the play to the opposition when required and looking for the pass if ever he was closed down.Baird gave his usual composed performance and took his goal extremely well.

Up front the pairings of Hassell, Pickering and Ap Gareth dovetailed well. Hassell scored a header in the second half after having gone close on several other occasions. His touch and control of the ball were very pleasing. Pickering scored three goals, one of which was at the end of a flowing move that involved three perfectly weighted passes that culminated in him rifling home! Ap Gareth fully deserved his MOM for his poacher`s hat trick and his unerring knack of picking out and playing the killer pass. Now the true test arrives in the shape of a Christleton side also hitting a rich vein of form, roll on next Saturday!! Congratulations go to the Bilsland family for the birth of a future Nomad, Aidan, born to delighted parents last Wednesday!!

Date: November 22nd
Competition: U10
Match Details: (H) Chester Nomads U10s v Castrol
Result: 3-0
Scorers: Hassell (2), Baird (1)
MoM: Jamie Chadwick

Match Summary: A well deserved victory for the Nomads who won the game with three late goals scored in the dying minutes of both halves. Hassell kept up his goalscoring run by netting twice and Baird completed the scoring.

Although up against a more competitive Castrol side than they had encountered earlier in the season, Nomads refused to push the panic button. Pleasing football and patience were the order of the day with every player playing their part.

Nomads had to wait until the last few minutes of the first half to get their just rewards. Just like the buses, we had waited a long time for one and instead got two at the same time!! Hassell finished well and Baird got the second within a minute.

The second half saw Nomads dominate without fully pushing home their advantage. Some of the football played was very pleasing on the eye with Nomads constantly looking to stretch the opposition. Hassell completed the scoring in the last minute, doing well to latch onto a smashing cross from Patterson .

In summary, not the emphatic victory the lads had been expecting but a very effective victory nevertheless with the added bonus of a clean sheet. This was due in no large part to MOM Chadwick who was both strong in the tackle and extremely effective in his distribution. Next up are Hope Farm JFC away...... Will we keep up our scoring run, will Patterson choose to shoot from his own half, will Carey juggle with both hands instead of one, will Bilsland be sleeping in the shed and will Jane Pickering be able to both access and reply to a text message all in the same week?!! All will soon be revealed.........

Date: November 8th
Competition: U10
Match Details: (H) Chester Nomads U10s v Upton Jags
Result: 7-1
Scorers: Hassell (3), Ap Gareth (3), Pickering (1)
MoM: Jack Pickering

Match Summary: Just what the doctor ordered!! After weeks of playing well but lacking the finishing touch, Nomads took all their frustrations out on a strong Upton side who were above them before the start of play. Every player played their part and it was extremely difficult to pick out a MOM but Pickering, often the bridesmaid but rarely the bride, did everyt right and his solitary goal was more than he deserved.

The returning Ap Gareth was sensational and his hat trick bears witness to an excellent all round performance. His return was a real fillip for the team and he was a constant menace throughout. Hassell, alongside him had arguably his best game of the season and also netted a fully deserved hat trick.

In midfield, Baird, Walker and Patterson were strong in the tackle and were the launchpad for many attacks. Rigg and Saul were extremely effective at not just doing the bread and butter work but also adding a touch of class just when it was needed. Defence was rock solid with Bilsland and Chadwick tackling cleanly, apart from one "misjudgement" on Bisland`s behalf which led to a free kick which Carey made a wondersave from! Carey had little to do and was extremely unlucky with the goal which he conceeded.

I was extremely impressed with the boys today and I felt that the hard work that they had been producing in previous weeks finally paid off. Whether with the slope/ wind or without, I felt that the boys really imposed themselves on the game. Many thanks to Richard Baird who refereed a game that was cleanly contested throughout. However, watch out tomorrow evening when Andy Gray and Richard Keys on The Last Word will be using the match to highlight a growing menace creeping into the youth game regarding set pieces!! Can`t say too much as it might spoil the surprise but needless to say Rory Delap and Peter Osgood will be invited to give expert analysis.............!!!

Date: 18.10.08
Competition: U10
Match Details: (A) Chester Nomads U10s v Newton
Result: 1-4
Scorers: Jack Pickering
MoM: Jack Pickering

Match Summary: Oh dear, today was'nt our lucky day again! Not only did Coach Carey have food poisoning but also the game of football did not go our way! The match started with the boys demonstrating they had learnt from the lesson of the previous game...and focussed their concentration from the beginning.... Carey demonstrating some excellent saves in the early minutes.

For much of the first half the boys battled against a well organised Newton team. Unfortunately, the smaller pitch prevented the team from performing the passing game that they can do so well. Unfortunately, two goals were conceded and the boys appeared dejected.

During the second half, the boys continued to battle although some defensive errors led to another 2 goals conceded. However, a well taken goal by Jack Pickering produced a well deserved goal for the team. Throughout the second half the boys played well, each playing hard and demonstrating strong committment...the diligence by Alex and James evident. Sam, David, Jamie and Daniel demonstrated good passing play and George positioned himself well. Unfortunately, the ball just does'nt seem to want to go in the net for us at the moment.

This was a very good team performance, although this week the lads did appear disappointed with the result. As Coach Carey states "you can often learn more from a loss"...The lads good team work and diligence will soon be rewarded....all good things come to those who wait!!!!

Many thanks to Richard and Sean for taking the team in Coach Careys absence. Boys, have a good break and will then meet Upton.

Date: Saturday 11th
Competition: U10
Match Details: (H) Chester Nomads U10s v Westminster Park Lions
Result: 1-2
Scorers: Saul (1)
MoM: Paterson

Match Summary: Sometimes football imitates life and fairness doesn`t quite come into it! Nomads made a sluggish start, conceeding two goals in the first five minutes, fought back with a goal of their own, dominated possession but couldn`t get a positive result! How we ended up not even drawing is a situation that perplexed the spectators.

Playing up the slope has aided us in the past but in the two most recent games it has counted against us. On both occasions Nomads have paid for early lapses in concentration allowing the opposing team to score unimpeded. This time the damage was done in the first minute when the Lions forward charged through without a challenge to fire past an exposed Carey. The second goal was scored by Nomads old boy Dixon who was quickest to react to a shot that had struck the bar.

To their credit, Nomads didn`t panic and started to play their way back into the game. The patient forward play was rewarded on 12 minutes when Saul was on target. Defensively, Nomads were tighter with Bilsland, Chadwick and MOM Paterson containing the threat posed. Going forward, we looked threatening without the end product! Numerous chances were created but not converted!!

Frustration was indeed the order of the day and valuable points were lost in the quest to qualify for the cup. I was very impressed with the way that the lads tried to play their way out of trouble and the lesson to be learnt is to concentrate and stay focussed from first minute to last. We will win far more matches than we will lose playing the way we are! Heads up boys and lets continue our excellent away form at Newton next week!

Squad:

Date: October 4th
Competition: U10
Match Details: (A) Chester Nomads U10s v Hoole Hornets
Result: 7- 1
Scorers: Hassell (4), Baird (1), Walker (2),
MoM: Hassell

Match Summary: After a nervous opening half against a gutsy outfit, Nomads ran out comfortable winners exploiting the wind advantage to maximum effect with five of their goals coming in the second period. Four of those goals came from our MOM, George Hassell, with Walker weighing in with two and Baird completing the scoring.

Nomads began well, determined to make amends for a poor ending to the previous match. However they met strong resistance from a very strong outfit. The strong wind in Hoole`s favour also proved to be a significant obstacle. Hassell opened the scoring, after four minutes, with his first of four strikes.A deserved equaliser was scored seven minutes later after an almighty goalmouth scramble. The next ten minutes were largely forgettable from a Nomads point of view as Hoole nearly took the lead with the ball hitting the bar. Luckily this was as bad as it got and Baird took us into the interval 2-1 up with a well taken goal following a flowing move. Pickering playing his part in the goal by distracting everyone with his injury!!

The second half was significantly better with Ward (ex Nomads,we have` not received our sell on clause!!) pulling off a number of good saves to keep the score down. Wave upon wave of attacks meant that something had to give and Walker and Hassell exploited the situation to maximum effect with two goals each after we had played some really good football. Hassell played really well but unfortunately missed his chance to make it four when he was distracted by the photographer behind the goal when he was shaping to shoot!!

A good team performance. Carey in goal overcame sickness to pull off some good saves but nearly took the `total football` maxim too far with his distribution!! Bilsland and Chadwick continued their strong partnership at the back. In midfield Captain Baird, Walker and Saul were very composed. Special mention must go to Rigg, making his debut, who took a nasty knock to the foot but recovered to take part in the last few minutes only to then get smacked in the face with the ball!! I can only think he must have upset someone!! Up front Pickering and Hassell played well in tandem, constantly stretching the opposition`s defence.

Well done to everyone concerned, a well fought out game, fairly played and well reffed by Paul (hard to believe he really is Savva`s mate!!). Next assignment, Wessie Park at HQ next Saturday!!

Date: Septembe 27th
Competition: U10
Match Details: (H) Chester Nomads U10s v Christleton New Scene
Result: 0-3
Scorers:
MoM: Connor Bilsland

Match Summary: Although having spells of good pressure, Nomads never really threatened New Scene enough to come away with anything. Against a strong but fair opposition, Nomads learnt a salutary lesson that you only ever get out of something what you put in. Too easily brushed aside in the tackle we succumbed to three well taken goals, two of which were scored on the counter attack with Nomads employing a revolutionary 0-0-7 formation at the time!!

On a positive note, we actually played some nice football going forward. I was more pleased with the way we found our fellow player this week than I had been in previous weeks. However the way poor Chadwick and Bilsland were exposed at the back would have occupied Alan Hansen for most of Match Of The Day in video analysis of defending!!

It was a very close run thing between our two defenders as to who won our MOM, both were accomplished in the tackle and neither were intimidated by the opposition but Bilsland gets the sponsor`s vote this time.

It is always a great test of how good a side is as to how they react to defeat and what lessons they learn from it. So it`s time to dust off the drawing board and prepare for the next game.........Jubilee Field, Huntington and a lie in for the Coach on a Saturday, bliss!! Let`s home everyone else is wide awake though!!!

Squad:

Date: September 20th
Competition: U10 league
Match Details: (H) Chester Nomads U10s v Hope Farm Hotsurs
Result: 3-0
Scorers: Walker (1), Hassell (1), Baird (1)
MoM: J. Chadwick

Match Summary: A really hard fought victory against a well organised team whose goalkeeper was in inspired form. A first half strike from that boy Walker (again!!) and two second half finishes from the Guilden Sutton duo of Baird and Hassell settled proceedings.

Right from the off Nomads showed willing, hoping to start as they had finished the previous weekend against Castrol. Unfortunately, the oppositions goalkeeper was more than equal to anything thrown at him. Time and time again our forwards and midfielders were thrawted in their attempts to score.

Walker scored with a great strike after seven minutes and we all thought that this might signal a breakthrough, but it was not to be!! As half time approached Coach Carey sensed a lowering of the tempo. This formed the basis of the team talk at the interval along with a call for all concerned to be patient.

The second half saw the team using the infamous Boughton Slope to good measure and looking to spread the play. Clever link up play led to Hassell finishing well on 33 minutes and Baird also got a deserved third on 42 minutes.

Although at times we stuttered and it did look like it was going to be one of those days, credit must go to the lads for the way they kept at it. Carey had little to do but his distribution and decision making was good, pulling off a superb save at 2-0 to earn his clean sheet. Chadwick and bilsland let very little through with Chadwick gaining a deserved MOM for his strong tackling and excellent distribution. In midfield Walker again caught the eye and gets the early vote for most improved player (all those lung bursting bike rides in Dolgellau ?!). Saul shows great assurance on the ball and Chambers uses his pace well. Baird`s distribution was back to it`s best in the centre. Up front Ap Gareth had an excellent game and was extremely unlucky not to have got on the scoresheet. Hassell lived up to his name and didn`t allow the opposing full back much respite! Pickering played well but showed some worrying signs of petulance that must surely result from too many trips to the Reebok?!!!! Well done Nomads. Next week is the big one, Christleton at home!! Well done to Mr Pickering for his strong reffing and strict implementation of the new Respect campaign!!

Match Details: (A) Chester Nomads U10s v Castrol JFC
Result: 11-0
Scorers: Hassell (3), Ap Gareth (2), Walker (2), Pickering (1), Saul (1), o.g. (2)
MoM: The team

Match Summary: A very impressive and well deserved victory for the Nomads against a very spirited Castrol side whom we struggled to overcome last season. The damage was done in the first ten minutes when three goals were scored thus giving us a solid platform for the rest of the game. Two further goals were added before half time, with second half featuring a further six strikes on target.

Given that the majority of the team had played so poorly only ten days earlier we approached this match with a little apprehension. The pre match chat consisted of the afct that the team could not play as badly again!! All fears were allayed in the first two minutes when a Castrol defender was forced, under pressure, to put through his own net. Hassell added the first of his hat trick after six minutes and Ap Gareth added an impressive third after 9 minutes.

Confidence was now spreading through the team and the passing moves so readily seen last season now became a feature. Walker the first of two goals on 21 minutes and his second goal was taken with aplomb just after the interval. Ap Gareth made it 6-0 after 29 minutes after a fine solo effort. Pickering now got in on the act, proving that once again he is deadly from two yards!!

Hassel then completed his hat trick with two well taken efforts in two minutes and began his Nomads career on a really posive note. A further o.g. and a fine Saul effort at the death made it 11-0.

In summary, a really nice way to bounce back and hopefully prove that once again the team will be a force to be reckoned with. Through the whole team it would take the most extreme pedant to find anything wrong with the performance. Conversely, it was hard to pick anyone out for a MOM. Special mention must go to the boy Bilsland who played on despite an extremely nasty looking injury, reminiscent of Terry Butcher in Stockholm or Paul Ince in Milan!! Hopefully we will also see Mr Pickering at next week`s game if he hasn`t caught a chill on his chest!! Well done Nomads, onward and upward!!!
