Dave Maynard

HEADLINE NEWS... Barnesy scored yesterday. We won ugly and the sight of him bundling the equaliser from 1 yard out was especially ugly. Dave got the winner in the second half for a 2-1 somewhat fortunate victory in freezing windy (again) conditions.

Clive was banished to the 4ths on the next pitch after Neil told Barnesy that he [Clive] was leading a rebellion to oust Rich! Rupert Drebbin slapped one of the Ramblers so that will be another fixture gone the way of the Shrewsbury School. No invite to the festival this year.

I asked the sometime police officer after why, but the answer was filled with more f words than Rooney knows, so I am none the wiser. f***in elbow I think

12 Feb Rockville A 3 2 Matty Beswick, Dave Maynard, Al Glasgow

The only winner in this drab game was the weather, which was not even fit for the seagulls that often grace this links course (scratch) pitch. Rockville are infamous at this level for having no less than three grounds and on this auspicious occasion we managed to visit all three: changing at Harrison Park, Playing at the beach, and finally the best part was a pint and warm pork pie at the Rugby Club.

The game was forgettable really as neither side could win the battle against the strong wind. Nomads opened up the scoring with a fine strike by Matty Beswick... the keeper would normally have saved this but didn't fancy diving into the huge puddle just to the left of his goal!

Dave kept up his Andy Cole strike rate and Al managed to avoid the cramps to storm forward and tap in the winner after Dave's good work.

5 Feb Irby CC H 1 1 Matty B

Ritchie Haining blotted this one out of his memory... Holding the ball mid way in our half, he was dispossesed - Irby rampaged forward, result a goal!!!!! A fine turn and fall over the outstretched leg of the Irby defender by Matty Beswick saved the fifths blushes as he rammed home the penalty in fine style.

29 Jan 5th XI H 1 6 Andy Carey

22 Jan St Lukes A 2 0 Alan Glasgow, Matty Beswick

The season just gets better and better 13 wins from 14 games and 1 freak loss. A double over St Lukes is worthy of a mention. As usual they gave us a real runaround with their passing, but this team is on a roll, (not one Neils eaten either) He made a couple of fine saves but the opposition keeper was far busier and kept the scores level till half time  with some great saves and some off target shooting from Dave and Bez (still celebrating leaving the Big Brother

8 Jan Essemay Vets H 2 0 Dave Maynard, Pete Ledsham

An injury and flu ravaged 5ths overcame the nowtiest scousers yet, they made our Vets seem positively pleasant to play against. From the kick off the abuse of our players and the ref (c/o Andy Carey- some bloke from Cheshire FA) who hid on the wing and gave every decision they shouted loudest for. Alex Purple Face Ferguson has never intimidated a ref worse than these old codgers. Dave finally got a goal after his barren patch and Ledshie came on for a cameo at the end and promptly tucked one in the corner as they backed off. They accused him of being a first team ringer. He pointed out that he had recently played against them for our Vets Does he look like a first team player

18 Dec Nomads 4ths H 4 3 Matty Beswick (2), Dave Maynard (2)
The 4ths started brighter than expected and had a couple of chances to take an early lead but failed to capitalise on their possession. The 5ths began to get into the game and started to battle for the ball more. A 5ths attack was stopped on the line and then the 4ths defence must have thought there was time for a pint before they cleared the lines... only to find Dave spring to his feet and nip the ball into the net 1-0. The 5ths then settled into a more familiar pattern and were rewarded with another goal from Matty Beswick... much to Kelly's dismay as he sees Matty getting ahead in the goal scoring stakes.

In the second half the 4ths gave Dave another Christmas present by again failing to clear and on Dave's third attempt he finally slotted home. Now cruising, the 5ths sat back and started to play a bit... the result was the 4ths nabbing a goal back 3-1. Matty then extended the lead and Barnesy felt so comfortable that he brought Wilbur on. A back heel and a flick over Ledshy's head both amazingly by the super sub himself brought a spell of festival football. Everyone wanted in on it and we got caught with two quick breaks to bring it to 4-3. Deciding that we best stop messing around we settled back into the more structured play and never looked like conceding another great victory.... bring on the 6ths!

11 Dec Crewe Nomads H 7 1 Richie Haining (3), Matty Bewsick (3), Andy Carey

Inspired team changes from skipper put Dave Baresi Butler at sweeper, Ant at left mid and Matty B and Richie H as a front pairing and they got a hat trick each- bench for Dave next week on his return, and no goals for Kelly despite umpteen shots (crosses) First half goals from Andy (nominally left back) Carey after being set up by the front two and then one each for Bez and the vice skip both set up by Tim the footballing Barnes put us 3 up at the break. Meanwhile only Chopper the ref knows why Crewe were denied a pen as Richie (Aussie Rules)Barnes took the centre forward the ball and half the turf at the Garrison I a sliding tackle. All 22 players agreed it was.

A flattering 7-1 scoreline  in the second half was due to 2 more each for the front pair, a tiring Crewe defence had no answer to their running and Al and Tim’s probing. Matt set up Rich’s second with a lob, and the hat trick came from an Al Glasgow ball to the left wing where the vice took the ball on the half way and ran past 3 tackles the 3rd of which was at waist height got up and chipped the keeper to general amazement and a “where did that come from” from the Fat skipper at the back.

Rich returned the favour to Matty B setting up two for him for his hat trick and he now has 10 goals same as Kelly.

27 Nov Rockville H 4 6 Paul Kelly (2, 1 pen), Matty Beswick (1 pen)

All good things come to an end but we didn't expect it to be today! Rockville arrived with a big squad of 16 due to their other teams games being called off but that was still no excuse for losing our 100% record. Nomads got off to a slow start, allowing the Rockville midfield and forwards to dance through to goal without a decent challenge.

New boy Brian Hayning fitted in well in the midfield alongside a tiring Tm Barnes.... late nights catching up with Tim towards the end. Matty B has never looked so tired - not sure why that would be.

As the Rockville striker said, "you could have battered us" with the many chances that we had... most of which ended up safely in the keepers arms.... barn doors would have been safe today!

Penalties galore in this game, two for each team and all converted. Nomads always found themselves behind in this game but continued to battle to  the end. Butler injured his groin, Joe got cramp, Wilbur nowhere to be seen... Barnesy not a happy captain until he got back to the bar!

Irby CC

2 1 Paul Kelly (2)

About the best team we have played this year we still emerged victorious. Our hero of the day, not Paul Kelly, as he would undoubtedly tell you but the Waitey's cross bar! Hit three times in the first half, bouncing back down into the box for a grateful Nomads defence to clear.

Kelly did open the scoring with a thunderous drive from the right hand side which rocketed across to the top left corner of the goal.... he says he looked up but... then followed the return of the Tuckeresq moment when ready to clear the lines after the keeper shouting "Out", Waitey changed his mind and shouted "Keepers"... Tucker was caught between two minds and neither of them was any good at making a firm decision so he half withdrew his foot only to see the ball spanner off past Neil into the goal.

Matty Beswick doing some fine attacking down the right, saw Kelly at the far post and put over an inch perfect cross for 'our hero' to head in. Quotes of "I'm not a striker but I've now got 10" were heard for the rest of the day.... even though since we had a recount it is only 8!!

Fine performances from Andy Carey and Al Glasgow duly noted...although perhaps controversial mentions for  "Cramp Twin" Al - allegedly Tim Barnes and Richie Haining (pronouced like Raining) did all his running and he still limped through half the game.. spent more time on his back than the proverbial..... so maybe it's back to bit parts for the Big Yin!

06 Nov Radbrooke Hall A 7 1

Dave Maynard (2), Matty Beswick (2), Paul Kelly (1),

Richie Haining (1), Og (1)

A festival of football as keeper Neil Waite described this game. From the start Nomads produced some of the finest 5th XI football ever witnessed (by the blind man and his dog?). Local imports Tim Barnes and 007 Bond, Steve Bond managed the central midfield like Carsley & Graveson but with flair.

Defence was solid and distributed the ball like the top European sides, that was until said mentioned Bond came back to help on a rare Hall attack... he promptly barged straight into their player to give away a penalty only for Waitey to roll back the years (as well as the ground when he landed) and superbly push the ball around the post.

Another great team display to continue the 100% run to six games and an outstanding average of 7 goals a game.... five of which in Nomads favour - classic!

16 Oct Liverpool Caveliers H 3 2

Matty Beswick (1), Richie Haining (1), Joe Bell (1)

Nomads 5ths continued on their best start to a season with another victory over a good Caveliers side. Nomads dominated play from the  from kick off and were comfortably leading 3-1 before Caveliers broke forward and caught Nomads on the back foot... well someone on the back foot anyway!

Nomads held their nerve and picked up the pace to see the game out as winners.

ALTERNATIVE REPORT: More nowty scousers not quite put to the sword in the second half as substitutions weakened the team, after a 2 goal first half we let them back in it. Kellys attempted thunderbolt shot headed down and in for first, more good passing put the Bez in for the second and the best move of the game saw Dave Maynard cross and a dummy leave Joe free at the back post to convert. Shock horror – Dave did not score!  4 straight wins.

09 Oct Vets H 6 4

Joe Bell (2), Dave Maynard (2), Paul Kelly (1),

Matty Beswick (1)

An outstanding performance by the fifths brought about the heaviest defeat the vets had received in years. Even without the inspirational skipper, Richie Barnes who was on international duty, the 5ths started very brightly, catching the Vets defence napping on a number of occasions. Joe opened the scoring and 5ths quickly established a three goal lead which was only reduced to two by a last minute penalty. Notable performances from Joe and Ant in midfield, Kelly & Haining full of running in the middle, Zine, Tucker Mckowatt and even Butler were solid at the back,  ever threatening up front with Dave and Matty and an outstanding display in the nets from stand-in keeper Andy Carey... although Waitey describes this as "good, not outstanding, as he did let in four you know!!". Subs Wilbur and Mike also playing a vital part in this magnificent display of team work. Superb contribution of heckling and support from Waitey despite the bad back and the roar of approval from both of the 6ths and 4th teams as they finished their thrilling game.

ALTERNATIVE REPORT: Yes, yes ,yes. We have beaten them at last. 3-0 after 7 minutes.5ths pace movement and quick passing overwhelmed strong Vets team. Phil Collister quote on assertion they could have drawn” If we had scored they would have gone up the other end and got 2 more.” Sweet.

02 Oct Halton Castle H 8 2

Clive Davies, Dave Maynard (2), Ant Green,

Paul Kelly (2),  Richie Haining,  Andy Carey

Fitness(!) told against outclassed new opponents Zine Davies scored the first for goodness sake, unmarked from corner. Dave scored 2 and could have had 6, Bez contrived to miss a hat-trick, Kelly and Carey scored piledrivers, Ant got on the scoresheet as well, Kelly a second half sub got his 2nd, and let Matty know all about it. After a private game of keepy uppie in the area over the goalkeeper with Dave, Richie lost by lashing the ball in the net.
25 Sep St Lukes H 2 0

A Carey,  D Maynard

First win against St Lukes for years – the nowty scousers argued themselves to a standstill. Great passing for first put Richie in, but a Thierry Henry bit of unselfishness saw a quick square pass put Andy Carey in on open goal to make sure of lead. Dave added second to make sure in the second half.
