Weekly Round Up 10/01/2026

Firsts

After a month-long hiatus, our first team was back in action

The players had their efforts pay off with an impressive 3-1 victory against a formidable opponent.

The match saw goals from three players: Ben Coward, Marco Apollonio, and Luca Jones with the luckiest goal you’ve ever seen!

Across the pitch, brilliant performances were evident from several players, particularly in the midfield where Luca, Rolo, and Manny dominated the game. Their ability to control the tempo and dictate play was instrumental in securing the victory.

However, the Man of the Match award went to Marco Apollonio, who made a triumphant return to the starting lineup after three months. His performance was nothing short of brilliant, demonstrating his skill and vision

Overall, the team's collective effort and individual brilliance not only secured the win but also set a positive tone for the upcoming matches in the season. The players' resilience in overcoming adversities such as injuries and lineup changes speaks volumes about their character and commitment to the team. With this victory, we have laid a solid foundation to build upon as we continue our campaign, aiming for further success in the matches ahead.

Reserves

MOM Stan Taberner
MOM Stan Taberner

Sadly we were beaten 2-0 against West Kirby in our first game of 2026 but showed enough against a good side to keep positive for a big few weeks coming up.

Started the game well, had the better of the first half and should’ve taken the lead after creating some really good chances. Second half defending the slope, we fell behind 10 mins in. Chasing the game, conceded a second to kill us off. Kept going until the end.

MotM Stan Taberner. Fearless and fantastic in a real physical game. Hard to remember he’s 16 at times

Vets

The Vets took on Newton Athletic from the top of the CWFL Premier Division.

The oppo turned up expecting to beat a load of old blokes easily but they got a shock. when Si Andrews opened the scoring and Danny followed this up with a penalty to make it 2.!

Just before half time Newton pulled one back with a goal were three players were offside!

A sin bin for Dan Delgado meant a tricky ten minutes with ten men which saw us go 3-2 down. Luckily our fitness showed with a goal from a corner claimed by three of our players (I think it was Gaz Edwards) and another penalty from Danny Andrews saw us through to the next round.

It was a fantastic effort from our lads against players 45 years younger than some of us!!

Masters

The oldest of our old boys, the Masters, were beaten 4-2 away to West Kirby in the Masters Friendship Cup.

Nomads were gifted a goal in the first 5 minutes with a poor touch by Ian, the incredibly convivial organiser of the cup, which Dools pounced on to assist Musti with the opening goal of the game.

Perhaps feeling bad for Ian, Nomads then decided to gift West Kirby 2 goals back. The first, our entire defence took a nap and allowed an unchallenged, incredibly weak strike from the edge of the box which Neil Barnes, MOM last week, managed to dive under, despite the ball being 3" off the ground....

The second was a worldie. A nonchalant cross, heading out of play, with no opposition player within 10 yards, David Starkey did a Dan Burn esque header, and curled it into the far corner of his own net. Truly remarkable!

2-1 at half time and time for the genius of Manager, Phill Walker, to inspire and make some changes.

Prefect start to the second half, a great run from Dools into the box and he squared it to Captain Mike Sixsmith to finish from 7 yards out.

Nomads continued to outplay the opposition with good control and good possession but no cutting edge.

West Kirby then played a ball forward to a lad 5 - 10 yards offside, he embarrassingly then scored waiting for the whistle, but the referee was high, or forgot why he was there and allowed the goal.

Pushing for the equaliser the temporary gaffer took a page out of Stuart Pearce's playbook and stook 6'4" centre half Abbott upfront.

This did not work, and West Kirby scored an actual worldie from 25 years into the top corner.

The team battled to the end, created lots of chances and should still have won, even conceding 4.

MOM Sean Dools, 2 assists, kicked lumps out of with a ref giving nothing as he was on another planet, and grafted until the final hit took him off the pitch for an early cuddle.

Two game run as gaffer, and despite an incredible 6-1 last week, Phill Walker tendered his resignation.
