Weekly Round-Up: High Drama, Heartbreak, and Hat-Tricks

It was a weekend of extreme highs and lows across the club, featuring everything from "Bent it like Beckham" free-kicks at St. George’s Park to last-minute heartbreak on the road. Here is how our teams fared:

First Team: Gallant Nomads Fall to Late Sucker-Punch

Result: Nomads 1-2 Bootle

Despite missing five senior players, the Firsts put in one of their most courageous performances of the season against top-three side Bootle. Nomads were arguably the better side for the majority of the contest, making the final result particularly bitter.

Bootle managed two "out of the blue" strikes, including a winner with the very last kick of the game. A massive silver lining was the return of George Hassall, who looked back to his best after a long layoff.

  • Man of the Match: Chris Rowntree. An unbelievable shift in midfield capped off with a rare (and well-deserved) goal.

Reserves: A Tale of Two Halves

Result: West Kirby 5-1 Reserves

A first half to forget saw the 2s go into the break 3-0 down after a sluggish start. However, showing great character after a "frank" halftime team talk, the side improved significantly.

The highlight of the day was a goal "Made in America"—UDA boy Jake Haynes whipping in a corner for Jayden Maala to nod home at the near post. While West Kirby added a fifth late on, the focus now shifts to Knowsley at home next weekend.

3rds: Fall to Narrow 3–2 Defeat Away at Newton

A really hard-fought performance from the 12 lads available against a Newton side who remain unbeaten in the league this season.

We went 1–0 down early but responded quickly, with Tim Ashbrook firing home a lovely equaliser. The pattern continued, as Newton took the lead again before Trey Lattie brought us level once more.

At 2–2 going into the break, the game was finely balanced. The second half proved even tougher, with only 11 men available and no option to make changes. Despite that, everyone battled tirelessly to the final whistle, while Newton were able to rotate and stay fresh with a full squad.

We created plenty of chances and could easily have gone ahead, but a late goalmouth scramble saw Newton bundle the ball into the corner for the winner — a frustrating way to lose after such a strong effort against the league leaders.

  • MOTM: Sam Christmas — outstanding on his return after some time out, especially impressive having just completed a 50-mile race!

Vets: Cup Semi-Final Bound!

Result: Nomads Vets 3-2 Wirral Masters

With the news breaking pre-kick-off that a win would secure a Friendship Cup Semi-Final spot, the stakes were high. Danny put the Vets ahead early, but a sloppy corner saw the sides level at the break.

After Danny restored the lead (and narrowly missed a hat-trick via the post), Wirral Masters equalized to set up a nervy finish. Enter Jack Delgado: arriving late, throwing on a shirt, and poaching the dramatic winner!

  • Next Up: An away trip to Queens Park Vets in the Semi-Final.

Sixths: James at the Double in Tight Affair

Result: West Kirby Vets 3-2 Sixths

The 6ths showed their tactical flexibility, switching from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 to combat a crowded midfield. Despite a heroic penalty save from Marc Howens to keep it level at the break, the 6ths fell behind early in the second half.

James—who traveled two hours from Stockport—proved to be a "find," scoring twice. His second was a sublime solo effort, beating three men before passing the ball into the net. Ultimately, a late penalty for the opposition proved the difference.

  • Man of the Match: Marc Howens. Commanded his area brilliantly and kept the team in it with a string of top-tier saves.

Masters: SGP Success for the "Czech Superstar"

Result: RAF Vets 1-4 Masters

On a glorious day at St. George’s Park, the Masters overcame a small squad (and the RAF "recalling" Dave Starkey) to put on a clinic.

Pete Tuma was the star of the show, opening the scoring before hitting a world-class free-kick on the David Beckham pitch that lived up to the name. Hayden Evans added a third before Tuma completed his hat-trick late on.

  • Special Mentions: Great returns for Croggy and Neil Davies, while Mark Abbott and Steve Smith provided the steel in the middle.

  • Man of the Match: Hayden Evans. A tireless engine and a constant threat upfront.
