Strong start to the season for the 1st XI

A tough trip away to a strong Maghull team was on the cards for a new look Nomads 1st team to begin the 2022/23 campaign.

With the Moss Bros away for the game and Delgado having to give himself a start, the injured Jordan Davies assisted from the side.

It was a young nomads team (with the odd exception) to start the game with Jack Minshull between the sticks. The experience of Matty Pierce and Dan Delgado at centre back, with George Stockton and Big Dave at left back and right back respectively.

The US millennials Steve and Hugo held the midfield with Lanni sitting just in front.

Captain Ben Coward started on the left wing with Spencer Postles out wide on the right and Branston starting in the centre of the three.

A strong bench of Sandro Maletta, Eddie Stockton and Harvey Solomon finished off the squad.

The Nomads lads got off to a great start as a quickly taken corner was pulled out to the edge of the box for Big Dave Mitchell to hit a Zidane-esque volley off the underside of the bar and back up into the roof of the net. Must be those new boots he was wearing.

1-0 Nomads

Both teams battled it out for the remainder of the first half with few chances between the teams.

Maghull started the second half the brighter and managed to get back on level terms shortly after the break as a looping cross was met by the head of their winger as Minsh came rushing out only to clatter the forward and see the ball land in the back of the net.

1-1

Nomads quickly got their noses back in front as Captain Cowhead won a free kick in a dangerous area. Lanni stepped up and whipped an inviting cross for Delgado to loop a header over the keeper into the far corner.

2-1 Nomads

Shortly after, Nomads increased their lead as substitute Sandro received a long throw to feet from Big Dave and held off the Maghull defender well and turned to slot a neat finish in past the goalkeeper.

3-1 Nomads

Maghull had quite a lot of the ball last 15-20 minutes but Nomads defended well, especially from set pieces against a tall Maghull team with Jack Minsh making a number of good saves late on.

Great start to the season for the lads taking all 3 points and next week a difficult test away to Marshalls.
